A documentary and exchange project, seeking to unravel the worldview of ‘the looter’, to make tangible the concepts of cultural theft and auto-destruction, and to explore the profoundly intimate, embodied and deeply felt experience of the carnivorous destruction of one’s own cultural heritage.
James Nguyen works with installation and performance, often collaborating with members of his family to examine the politics of art, representation, and decolonisation. In developing this new work, during Adhocracy he collaborates with his Uncle, Nguyen Cong Ai, who lives in South Australia, recording conversations and performances they co-create about cultural objects each have in their possession, and the complexity/ complicity of diasporic theft and ownership.
