Life Is Short and Long is a performance installation created from three years of travel yarns and investigation of how people respond to crisis and change.
Performance-maker Emma Beech turns a bitter-sweet catalogue of human resilience in the seemingly disparate locations of Barcelona, Wirrabara in the mid-North of South Australia, and Port Adelaide, into a magical, witty and occasionally utopian meditation on human nature.
Beautiful, insightful and surprising, Life Is Short and Long brings to life a multitude of characters and stories told from the point of view of an artist on the road, who discovers the unexpected turns of life for herself along the way.
Company/Presenter Profile
Emma Beech started making shows for her mum in her bedroom when she was six. Since then, she has graduated from Flinders Drama Centre and gone on to become an actor, theatre-maker and stand-up documenter.
Emma finds the seemingly banal and everyday endlessly fascinating. Her work is often direct address, and montages stories, gestures & physical narratives that are collected from interviews, conversations, confessions and observations with imaginings of everything in between.
Emma works with collaborators that include Carte Blanche and Group 38, in Denmark, and Last Tuesday Society, Cab Sav, Real TV, Patch, Monkey Baa, Playwriting Australia and Vitalstatistix, in Australia. She is a founding member of the Australian Bureau of Worthiness, through which she creates residency-made performance works.
Her production Homage to Uncertainty won the Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready award at the 2013 Adelaide Fringe. For screen, she has worked with SA filmmakers Closer Productions and hosted the series Artshow with the ABC and the Australia Network.
